I've been playing with flour paste resist and bleach and I'm loving the results! I learned this in Jane Dunnewold's workshop and it is really fun. I've used both Kona cotton and P & B cotton and the color results are great. One trick I learned with the flour paste is to refrigerate the mixture before you use it. It is much easier to work with - a very nice consistency.

I'm laughing...I was doing the same thing last week, although I have to finish the pieces.
I was doing it for our local art quilt guild for a workshop...one of the people said she couldn't figure out WHY I would want to do this....
When I explained what I had in mind for them, she said "Oh, you'd going to do another technique with them for surface design (!). Of course, she does a lot of hand-dyes....
Very nice. I tried flour paste once but it took FOREVER to rinse it out. Any tricks to getting it out?
Those are cool, Carole- and how did you learn to get the paste off the fabric? I tried it once on a silk scarf- I liked the effect, but the stuff was a bear to get out, and the hand of the fabric is still stiff, even after multiple washings and Milsoft.

Thanks for the great comments, everyone! I did spray the bleach on. That means I used a respirator and good ventilation, too. The flour paste is a little hard to get out, but I scrubbed it, let it soak for and hour or so, then washed it in warm water. You don't have to put it on very thickly to get a good result, either.
